Grade 2

 Welcome to Grade 2!

Grade 2 is a special year in the life of your child.  I believe in providing a safe, caring and Christian environment in which the children will be motivated to learn.  We will ensure this by following the class rules:  The 4 R’s.  We will respect each other and the school.  We will be responsible for our belongings, our work and our actions.  We will respond to the needs of others.  We will also be resourceful, by solving problems independently.  Most important of all, we all agree to try our best in everything we do.

The focus of the Grade 2 program is to prepare them for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  Spirituality is the basis of our teaching and permeates through all areas of the Grade 2 program. Children follow a set of rules that teach the values of respect, responsibility and reverence. Each child is a unique gift from God, and at St. Francis of Assisi School, we believe in working together in a cooperative environment where all students have a true sense of belonging and friendship.

We provide an expansive and rich variety of learning opportunities to promote and develop growth in the spiritual, physical, artistic and social/emotional areas. Our Grade 2 curriculum is very exciting and follows the B.C. Ministry of Education Guidelines.

  • Reading:  Reading is the basis of all learning.  At St. Francis of Assisi School, we use Literacy Place, a fabulous program for reading advancement.  Students learn through interacting with books in their reading groups while they rotate through different literacy centers.  We provide opportunities for Silent Reading on a daily basis, Buddy Reading, Peer Tutors, novel studies, Readers’ Theater and Story Time.  The Home Reading Program provides families with a framework for making reading a daily routine within the family home.
  • 6 + 1 Traits of Writing:  Students are immersed in various activities which fosters the love of words and imagination in their story writing.  Grade 2 students are provided with many different forms of writing each day.
  • Math: Math Makes Sense is used in conjunction with other math programs.  Students are involved with hands-on activities that provide opportunities to learn key concepts, as well as, problem solving strategies.

We take pride in our school and everything it stands for.  Students are taught to strive for the best and always put effort into everything they do. Students get involved in many types of service activities at the classroom level and at the school level.   Students obtain a sense of ownership and respect for their school and for the greater school community.

Learning comes alive in Grade 2!  My goal is to create life-long learners who love coming to school and who love their school.  I look forward to working with students, parents and other teachers to provide the best education possible for your children.  Grade 2 will be an enjoyable and memorable year!

                                                                      Let’s have fun learning together!
