Welcome to Grade 7! This will be an exciting and important year for your child as he or she prepares for their high school years.
Throughout the year, students will be actively involved in an integrated curriculum and co-operative learning strategies will be incorporated into our classroom.
The following is an overview of the subject areas and some of the major topics we will be studying this school year.
Religion studies will focus on the life of Jesus, how he enriches our lives, and preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
In Language Arts, students will be introduced to several forms of literature including the short story, the novel, and poetry. Opportunities will be provided for students to explore their creative literary abilities, while at the same time developing skills and an appreciation for literature. Understanding the grammar, usage, and structure of the English language will be other areas of focus, and our studies will provide a solid foundation for high school English courses. Expository, descriptive, and narrative paragraph writing, and an introduction to essay writing, will also be examined.
In addition to covering all topics of the Mathematics 7 curriculum, further emphasis will be placed on word problem solving, as this is essential for success in high school mathematics.
Students will learn about Earth’s crust, ecosystems, and chemistry in Science this year.
The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome are studied in Social Studies. Students’ research reports and oral presentations on what they believe is the “greatest achievement” of Ancient Egypt is always a favorite assignment. The class “Ancient Egypt Day”, where we do all things Egyptian, is another highlight of Social Studies class.
Our French language studies will focus on introductory grammar and dialogue, and students will continue to develop their written and oral French language abilities.
Students are given frequent opportunities to incorporate art into subject studies.
Computer activities will be combined into all academic areas to ensure that students have a solid foundation of computer skills knowledge to build on in their future educational careers.
In our classroom, we will be working to become a team that respects and listens to each other. There will be a concentration on self-esteem, being responsible for our own behavior and using effective communication skills. These themes will underlie our work this year.
