BOOK CLUB

All for the love of reading! Students who join Book Club every year all share the love of reading! Our students read a variety of books both fiction and nonfiction. Students are able to read at their own pace and meet regularly in small groups. During Book Club readers enjoy a relaxed environment to share ideas, personal reflections and critique the book they are reading. Questions are organized into the beginning, middle, and end of the story, which allows students the great opportunity to focus on making predictions, inferring, summarizing and finding connections.

SPELLING B

The Spelling Bee is an annual event at St. Francis of Assisi School. Every Spring, students in grades 4 - 7 are invited to improve their spelling skills and participate in the Spelling Bee. An in-school Spelling Bee competition is held in which the contestants spell a broad variety of words. The top speller then represents St. Francis of Assisi School at the CISVA Spelling Bee, competing with children from other Catholic schools.

ENRICHMENT MATH CLUB

This after-school club runs weekly for students from Grades 4 to 7 who desire to challenge themselves and push their mental capacities beyond what is demanded in a normal classroom setting. Students will be taught novel ways in approaching interesting problems in Math. They will take the Gauss Math Contest in spring.

Speech Arts Program

Open to students in Grades 1-7, Speech Arts Club includes the categories of Bible Reading, Memorized Poetry Recitation and Speech Recitation. Leading contenders become eligible for entrance into The Archbishop James F. Carney Catholic Elementary Schools Speech Arts Festival held each spring.

Service Club

Service Club is a great way for students to demonstrate leadership and involvement in their community. Students in Grades 4-7 have the opportunity to perform service through different groups such as Peer Helpers, Classroom Monitors, Altar servers, Phone Monitors and Peer Readers.

Choir

Everyone is welcome to actively participate in the school's two choirs: Intermediate & Primary Choirs. Choir practice is held during the lunch hour. Singing events include school Masses, seasonal Masses and special Sacramental Masses. Community outreach events include singing at Burnaby Village Museum, special school/church events such as The Over 50 Club, and visiting Extended Care facilities.

Catholic Outreach

The Catholic Outreach Club aims to reach out to the local and larger global communities to support causes that promote the dignity and well-being of all people. Club members organize activities such as We Scare Hunger, Bake Sale, Colour Days, We are Silent, and other fun, worthwhile events. The club has taken on the role of raising money to help our foster child.

Altar Servers

Our altar servers are so important to our St. Francis community. Altar servers are boys or girls who have been trained by the parish priest, in our case, Father Lucca. The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. The priest usually requires between three and six altar servers during the Mass.
